University of South Carolina Beaufort junior Leia Aldrich is going places. This fall, she'll spend four months in the nation's capital as a participant in South Carolina's prestigious Washington Semester program.

The university is employing new, interactive technologies including artificial intelligence (AI), virtual reality, gaming and 360-degree photography to tell the story of the first self-governed town of formerly enslaved people in the United States and to dynamically present Harriett Tubman, Robert Smalls and other historical figures, places and events in the Lowcountry. Three USCB Communication Studies Majors spent last week gaining valuable broadcasting experience with local TV station WHHI. Seniors Makayla Bing and Julia Flemming and junior Nicholas Milhan learned about working on air and behind the camera, producing, editing, and day-to-day operations of the TV station.

Life coaches and other experts agree: Once you find something that ignites your passion, follow it! Recent USCB graduate Khadashia McMillian found she loved working with youth, and her passion recently landed her a job helping at-risk kids rise above their circumstances.

Most of us aren't destined to catch a 2,500-lb. shark using just a rod and reel, but watching USCB graduate Taylor Horton's documentary "Passion Led Me Here" is the next best thing.

The University of South Carolina Beaufort is celebrating the success of Theodora (Tedi) Light, who is the first USCB student to receive a Fulbright Student Award. The Fulbright U.S. Student Program provides grants for individually designed study and research projects abroad. Light (Class of 2020, B.A. in History and Spanish) will spend five to seven months in Spain researching the enslavement of indigenous people along the coast of La Florida in the 16th century.

Announcing University of South Carolina Beaufort's Spring 2020 Academic Honors List!

Alexis Henderson, who graduated from USCB in 2017 with a B.A. in English, is celebrating the release of her first novel. "The Year of the Witching" was published by Penguin/Random House and debuted last month. The book is a major achievement - it would be for any novelist, but a two-book contract with a major publisher just three years after graduation is almost unheard of.

Mentored by Dr. Lynn McGee, the USCB Sales Team competed in the 2020 Parker Regional Sales Competition (PRSC) in Statesboro. The PRSC is a great place for students to mesh their classroom-based knowledge of sales with real-world applications. Individual feedback, networking, and even recruiting for future opportunities often occurs as the PRSC.

"By the River," a University of South Carolina Beaufort (USCB) and South Carolina ETV (SCETV) collaboration, has been honored with a bronze Telly Award in the category of Set Design for Season 2. After receiving his undergraduate degree in Interdisciplinary Studies, Louis Brown, USCB Class of 2018, went on to Full Sail University in Orlando, FL, where he earned his Masters in Fine Arts. USCB's Education Class of 2020 is the largest graduating class in the department's history with 26 graduates! The majority have accepted teaching positions for the 2020-2021 academic year with Beaufort County School District. Congrats, grads! We are so proud of you!
