University of South Carolina Beaufort's Karina Julia Dorris has been selected by the University of South Carolina-Columbia TRIO Department to become a Ronald E. McNair Scholar. Dorris is from Bluffton, SC and graduated from Bluffton High in 2021. She will graduate from USCB in 2025 with a B.S.N. in Nursing.

Campus Compact, national coalition of colleges and universities working to advance the public purposes of higher education, has named 173 student civic leaders who will make up the organization's 2022-2023 cohort of Newman Civic Fellows. Richard Bennett, a junior majoring in Human Services at University of South Carolina Beaufort, will join students from 38 states, Washington, D.C., and Mexico to form the cohort.

USCB celebrates first student Fulbright recipient

The University of South Carolina Beaufort is celebrating the success of Theodora (Tedi) Light, who is the first USCB student to receive a Fulbright Student Award. The Fulbright U.S. Student Program provides grants for individually designed study and research projects abroad. Light (Class of 2020, B.A. in History and Spanish) will spend five to seven months in Spain researching the enslavement of indigenous people along the coast of La Florida in the 16th century.

Alexis Henderson, who graduated from USCB in 2017 with a B.A. in English, is celebrating the release of her first novel. "The Year of the Witching" was published by Penguin/Random House and debuted last month. The book is a major achievement - it would be for any novelist, but a two-book contract with a major publisher just three years after graduation is almost unheard of.

Mentored by Dr. Lynn McGee, the USCB Sales Team competed in the 2020 Parker Regional Sales Competition (PRSC) in Statesboro. The PRSC is a great place for students to mesh their classroom-based knowledge of sales with real-world applications. Individual feedback, networking, and even recruiting for future opportunities often occurs as the PRSC.
